You've recently installed the Ryzen 5 3600 with a Gigabyte b450 Gaming X motherboard and 8 GB RAM. Everything is running at default BIOS settings except the fan, which is set to maximum speed. During stress tests like OCCT or Prime95, the CPU temperature spikes to around 95°C within seconds, then drops sharply to 93°C after a brief throttle. Using an Antec A30 cooler didn't improve things. I've tried different thermal paste types and even emptied the cooling tubes without success. After disabling PBO in BIOS, performance improved slightly, with all cores reaching higher speeds (up to 4.02 GHz) but still hitting 95°C before dropping back down. I adjusted the BIOS Vcore offset voltage based on forum advice, settling at -0.087V. Surprisingly, temperatures stayed low—around 80°C, occasionally reaching 87°C. It seems a strong negative offset is necessary for stable performance at higher frequencies, even though OCCT runs without issues. What might I be overlooking?

The temperature hit in just a few seconds. Was the CPU heat spreader and the chip a bit too tight after applying a lot of side force while securing the A30 cooler?

Typically such issues arise from improper heat sink placement. Redo the installation and ensure it's securely fastened.

Are you certain the temperature readings are correct? I recall reading that some monitoring tools don't work well with AMD processors. If it isn’t the issue, then P95 and similar synthetic tests might stress the CPU beyond its intended limits. Consider using a different benchmark such as a game or rendering test.
