Hello! I’m facing a peculiar problem with my current configuration. I have a Ryzen 9 5950X paired with an MSI MAG x570 Tomahawk, a Gigabyte RX580 Aorus 4G, a Samsung EVO 970 m.2 1Tb, and a Bequiet straight power unit rated at 11.75 kW. I temporarily used the Gigabyte RX580 Aorus 4G until I could get an RTX 30xx GPU. Now I’m stuck with this unusual issue: during POST/boot, there’s no monitor signal. Everything functions normally once the OS loads—Ubuntu 20.04 works fine, rendering 4K at 60Hz, running 3D apps without issues, and the GPU is properly detected. However, before the OS starts, I see a black screen; the monitor remains in standby mode. This happened with my previous setup (ASUS Phoenix 1660S, due to video memory failure) and the borrowed EVGA 2070, using both HDMI and DP cables. I could see the POST and access BIOS, but now with the RX580, it only shows up when the OS login screen appears. I’ve tried different displays and MoBo HDMI during boot, but nothing works. I even reset the CMOS (removing the battery), which turned NumLock on during boot—it was previously off. No solutions seem to work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Check the release notes for AMD GPU unified Linux 20.45. Also find the drivers page at amdgpu-install. Your RAM isn't listed in the QVL, and the MSI Global document was edited on December 25, 2020 by Breeksta.

The AMD GPU kernel module is functioning properly in Linux, though there are no issues there. Before Linux, I couldn't observe the POST process, couldn't access the BIOS by pressing DEL, and couldn't see the OS selection menu when using F11.

Check out the newest beta BIOS update. RAM setup seems like the main point of interest, though a NVIDIA card performed well. It’s possible high resolution could strain the GPU during posting. Updated on December 25, 2020 by Breeksta.

I resolved the issue. The 2017 GPU BIOS was significantly outdated. After flashing the 2018 version (the newest available), everything functioned properly (now I can see POST, enter BIOS and navigate). On Gigabyte’s site it says the latest BIOS supports rev1.1 GPUs, but I have rev1.0. I’m unsure what the difference is, but in my setup rev1.0 GPU with rev1.1 BIOS works perfectly. The process was:

- Used Ubuntu 20.04 (or a live USB) and followed the amdmeminfo tutorial at the provided link.
- Checked VRAM type; it was Hynix.
- Downloaded the matching VRAM BIOS (F81) from Gigabyte’s site.
- Installed it carefully, ensuring the correct settings.
- Used ATI ATIFlash 4.69 Linux 64-bit to flash the GPU.
- Verified the installation with amdvbflash commands and system info.

The output confirmed a successful update: AMDVBFLASH version 4.69, BIOS revision 015.050.002.001.000000.
I also backed up the current BIOS (adapter 0) before flashing.
This should work with Ubuntu Live USB as well. No worries about Windows.
