Rust stops working unexpectedly
Hello everyone. After beginning Rust and connecting to a random server, it keeps malfunctioning. Occasionally it lasts around 5 minutes or extends up to an hour or more—but it definitely happens. The following issues appear: the game shuts down on its own (such as pressing ALT + F4) without any warning, the game freezes requiring a shutdown via Task Manager, or it displays a blue screen of death accompanied by system service errors like "wfplwfs.sys NOT Handeled." These messages are just examples; there are many more. The problems occur randomly—either through closing, freezing, or the blue screen—and I’m struggling to figure out what causes them. The only programs running in the background about 90% of the time are Chrome and Discord. I attempted to play without any background apps and with or without Discord overlay, but it didn’t help. So far, my attempts at fixes include: resetting all settings to defaults, using minimum and maximum options, playing in fullscreen or window mode, adjusting power management in NVIDIA settings, switching administrator privileges, reinstalling drivers, cleaning the PC thoroughly, and even overclocking RAM. I also tried updating BIOS and reinstalling Windows, but those didn’t resolve the issue. I’ve changed RAM speeds, replaced graphics cards, and cleaned the system carefully, yet nothing seems to work. My current PC specs are: motherboard Asus Prime X370-prime pro, Ryzen 7 1700X with DDR4 3200mhz RAM, Nvidia RTX 3070, 250GB SSD. I’ve tried everything I could remember or found online, but nothing sticks. I’m considering a full PC rebuild, though I can’t afford it right now. Please share any advice or solutions you might have. This problem has been bothering me for two months, and I’m grateful for the help received so far.
It seems like the problem might be related to RAM, which you can check using BluescreenView for a detailed list of crashes or blue screens. I’ve faced a similar situation before—only Escape From Tarkov caused the same issue. Other games didn’t have problems, but EFT would crash in the same way. I tried everything possible, like reinstalling Windows and testing all hardware individually. RAM performed well in memory tests and other games, though. It’s worth noting that a different RAM module can resolve the issue without replacing the whole system. Consider getting a 2x16GB kit instead of a larger one; it might fix your Rust-related crashes at a lower cost than buying a new computer.
I verified every part thoroughly, including running a RAM test with Windows Memory Diagnostic. Everything appears to be working properly. I plan to purchase two 16GB RAM kits and try again—this seems like the optimal solution at the moment. Appreciate your advice!
Someone asking about the fix might think it was my mistake. I reduced the clock speed from 3200mhz to 2933mhz, and the game ran smoothly without crashes. I should note it performed roughly 5-10% slower, which is normal after underclocking but still acceptable and more affordable than replacing RAM. It seems RAM can be a bit unpredictable with its configuration. Glad I could assist someone facing a similar problem.
