Windows 8 has significant issues across all aspects. Without an OS you may reach the BIOS or see a "no bootable media found" alert. Current systems no longer support loading binaries directly.

For Linux enthusiasts on this platform, what has been the experience with performance? While some tools allow running non-Linux games, how effective are they? Just seeking a quick fix until I can get a Windows key.

Install Windows right away and wait until you can afford it. There shouldn’t be any major downsides. I’d prefer having Windows for gaming instead.

Linux gaming on PCs generally performs well with Steam OS machines, making Windows seem less appealing for many reasons. Using Windows often yields better performance, so sticking with the free version makes more sense.
