Hi, I set up a new computer with Windows 11 for the first time. Everything seems to be working fine, but I need to access my old NAS. I tried enabling SMB1, but after a few hours it’s using almost all of my 32GB RAM. After turning it off, the RAM usage returns to normal, yet I can’t connect to the NAS anymore. Anyone have a solution?

Do you think Windows is scanning every file on the NAS? It could really consume your memory.

If this applies (assuming it's likely), allow the process to finish and RAM consumption should return to typical levels after indexing completes.

I’ll give it a shot, though I’m unsure how long it’ll take with an 8 TB NAS. Only time will show.

I'll wait 24 hours. If it continues, I'll reassess and consider alternative approaches.

SMB1 is outdated due to significant security flaws and lack of updates. It's very old technology. If you're using a NAS that only supports SMB1, think about upgrading. An off-the-shelf Optiplex or TrueNAS setup costs around $100-200 and offers much better performance overall.

It seems you're questioning something, but your PC has been running nonstop for several days now.

Sure, I'll wait a bit and let the discussion unfold. I'm ready to help once you're all set.

I understand it's outdated and it's not ideal, but I'm aware of the situation. It performed well on my previous Windows 10 system, though I'm aware of the associated risks. This device is a Terastation TS-XEL43E.
