Running the original Halo on Xubuntu 20.10: a guide for Linux users
You're planning to run Halo CE on your Linux laptop using Xbox Wireless Model 1708, with controller support. You're currently using xubuntu 20.10 and have Wine installed along with the original ISO and game key. You're looking for guidance on installing without a CD patch and possibly an online patch for online play. Do you need additional tools besides Wine? How would you proceed with installation, including the game, DirectX files, and patches? Also, which DirectX redist files are required?
Using WINE alone can lead to issues, missing Proton patches and translation layers for games. Though it's possible to configure manually, using Lutris with a community script is much easier—it sets up the WINE environment automatically. You can find more guidance here: https://lutris.net/ https://lutris.net/games/halo-combat-evolved/. I think I've managed to get it working on Wine now—setup is up and the game should run in about half an hour. If that doesn't work, I'll switch to Lutris.
I managed to run Halo with Wine and DXVK. Now I need to find the controller settings. The option looks grayed out and isn't selectable.
I've already got it working. I copied that DLL from my Windows install. I’m not sure about OpenGL 3.3 but it works with Vulkan since I have dxvk installed. I’m avoiding Lutris because I ran into problems. Should I install Xinput on Linux or use Wine? It’s set up on the Linux side already. If I’m using Winetricks, I think I’m on the Wine side just to confirm. I’ve shared this on r/linuxgaming, r/wine_gaming, the gaming Discord, and the Wine forums—I’m part of LinuxGaming already.
