Hey there, I understand you're curious about overclocking a non-K i3 6100 on the Z170 platform. It's true that some people have tried and there have been discussions with reputable motherboard manufacturers. Has Intel actually had any success in this area? I'm trying to get this board for a good price, but my main goal is to overclock the i3 6100. Can you confirm if this motherboard can be used for that purpose?

Intel released a microcode update in January. Use any BIOS from before February before it was removed. Your i3-6100 at 4.6GHz is working well on the MSI board. Other boards besides the Z170 also support Non K OC:

Do you believe the i3 6100 @4.6Ghz with DDR4 3000Mhz could bridge the gap to the i5 6500? I’ve noticed many benchmarks showing the i3 6100 performs significantly better when paired with fast memory, clearly benefiting from it. Plus, investing in a Z170 board makes sense if you plan to upgrade to something like the i5 6600k or i7 6700k later. If there’s a more affordable option, you might consider it, but I’d still opt for the Z170 due to my future plans.

Would you like to observe some performance checks? What kind of test would be most useful?

Certainly, I can confirm you should be able to overclock the processor on this particular board. The ASRock Z170A-X1/3.1 ATX LGA1151 model is available for $67, making it more affordable compared to other options.
