Hey! Your brother got a great Microsoft Surface Laptop for your birthday. Linux should run nicely there—especially if you're comfortable with it. You don’t need to cancel the order unless you really want something lighter. For your needs, a thin yet capable notebook is perfect. It can handle coding in C, C++, Python, Java, and even streaming movies. Just pick a model with solid performance and good battery life. Happy studying!

Don't rely on high expectations. A Dell XPS 13 works well with Linux support, and you can get a developer edition with Ubuntu included by default. Note: I have an XPS 13 running dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows 10 without problems.

From what I’ve figured out, installing Linux on a Surface device isn’t possible. There are communities trying to do it, but nothing has worked so far.

Wendel likely has a Surface running Linux, so it should work fine. For your specific needs, an XPS 13 or one of Xiaomi's laptops would be better. A touchscreen can hinder programming, and while a larger display helps for coding, you'll end up using most of the screen when watching videos.

Choose the developer edition that includes Ubuntu by default. It seems the developer version is likely more affordable.

In Austria, the Windows XPS models are currently on sale, while the Ubuntu version remains unaffected. They also effectively conceal them by navigating directly to the XPS site and scrolling through the choices to locate the Ubuntu alternatives.
