Running GTX 1080 at higher speeds using a 500W power supply.
Running GTX 1080 at higher speeds using a 500W power supply.
Running an i5 6600k at 4.3Ghz with a GTX 1080 is possible. I'm checking if connecting a 1080 to a 500W power supply will still allow overclocking in Afterburner. I was wondering if this would be safe, or if I should opt for a more powerful 600W/700W supply instead. Nvidia suggests a minimum of 500W, so I thought I could proceed but wanted to confirm my concerns and see if others have faced similar issues. The PSU from FSP Group seems reliable enough.
FSP makes some good PSUs, and some bad ones too. If yours is a high quality one, I would still leave it at stock. If its a poor quality one, change it asap.
Mostly, for overclocking a system like yours, a good quality 550W-600W PSU is sufficient, but yours can be lower quality. Let us know the exact model number of the PSU.
