As @Dan Castellaneta mentioned, the PS3's Cell chip runs on a PowerPC design and isn't supported by Steam OS.

Not feasible. SteamOS is designed for x86-64 systems, while the PS3 uses POWERPC architecture. Sony discontinued Linux support on the PS3 years ago; initially, running a PowerPC-based Linux distribution was possible, but this feature is no longer available.

I believed you were referring to later versions. I thought the original PS3 could still run Linux, and there was a hardware update to stop people from installing it in the ROM.

It's not possible to run Linux on a first-gen PS3 even with the newest software. Upgrading the game would help, but newer systems are designed without Linux support.
