Hello, I’m facing a problem with my RTX Asus Strix 2080 OG graphics card. It doesn’t always show up on my PC. My build details are available here: PC Part Picker link. The case model is Node 202. The issue began around 5-6 years ago, soon after assembling the system. About two weeks later, I noticed the GPU would randomly shut down, especially when I moved the case or changed the video cables (HDMI to DVI). When it happened, fans spun fast, the screen went dark, and the GPU lights stayed on. To fix it, I had to turn off the whole system and restart. Gradually, the problem got more frequent—moving the case made it stop completely. Eventually, I could only use the motherboard’s video output, and Windows wouldn’t detect the GPU. The only solution I’ve tried is removing the card, unplugging its power cables, and reinserting everything. If that works, I avoid moving the PC. To simplify, I leave the case open so I can repeat the steps quickly if it happens again. Sometimes it doesn’t work on the first try, requiring 2–3 attempts. Usually, I keep the PC horizontal with the cover open. But since the side where I can easily remove and reattach the GPU is horizontal, moving it vertically after working around it lowers the chances of success—likely due to handling. I think the problem might be with the case’s PCIe connector, as I don’t connect the GPU directly to the motherboard. What might be causing this? How can I fix it? This PC is in Portugal, and I use it for 1080p gaming or medium 1440p gaming about three months a year. Would you recommend changing the PSU (SF600) or the GPU? I’m considering the RT 7700 XT Asus Dual Fan, which looks like a good value at around 430 Euros. I believe my build uses less than 450 watts, so a 600 gold PSU should be fine. Please advise. I purchased the card in 2019 and it mentions a two-year warranty, so I doubt I can return it now.
It's more than just shifting; the table occasionally vibrates, and the PC powers off when you press or move it. I intend to set it on the floor, but something feels off. Even after removing and reattaching the card, it doesn't always function properly, even when placed horizontally. The photo below comes from Google, but it's the same card and case I currently don't have (I'm traveling back soon). It has two screws on the sides. As noted, it has two screws, but I plan to position something beneath the GPU to contact the fan cover when switching to a vertical setup, so I can inspect it. I'm hoping to gather ideas or solutions before returning.
It might be a damaged PCB on the GPU or an issue with the PCIe M.2 slot. Have you checked those? You could gently press the GPU connector to look for cracks. Also, try using a different GPU in your setup and another GPU on another machine to pinpoint the problem. Edit: I notice a riser cable—could that be the cause? I have a spare riser cable that’s worth testing as well; I can replace it entirely. Last year, I checked the PCI connector on the GPU, and it seemed fine, but it’s worth checking again. I can share pictures here in about a week. Testing it on another motherboard is challenging for me since I don’t know many people who would agree to help. However, I might be able to take it to a PC repair shop and have them give it a try.
Do you believe your computer can manage the ASUS RX 7700 XT dual fans paired with the SF600 power supply? Even if the RTX is fine and the riser cable is the issue, it shouldn’t cause a problem. I can take the RX 7700 XT back to Portugal since I’m planning to assemble a new system.
