RTX 4090 - AMD Ryzen 9 5900X modelHigh-performance graphics card for gaming and productivity.
Hello guys, I have an RTX 4090 Trinity from Zotac and Ryzen 9 5900X cpu with ASUS Tuf x570 as MB. FPS decent, but i feel like i'm not happy about it. I do have a 1920x1080 240HZ Gaming Monitor. My question stands, is it a cpu bottleneck? Usage for GPU is between 40-50% and CPU will be the same between 40-50%. Also i'm thinkin of upgrading to a Ryzen 9 7900X with new MB + DDR5 5600MHz 32gb of Ram. Will the upgrade do any changes or not? Or will i have to upgrade to a 2k/4k Monitor? Thank you kindly!
I agree. My setup was a [email protected] with all cores, which performed poorly with my RTX 4080, causing a lot of stutter and giving the impression something was wrong. After switching to the AMD 7700x, I noticed a significant boost in frame rates and a noticeable improvement in performance, making the 4080 much more responsive. For a 4090, I suggest using a 1440p or 4K display with high refresh rate to get the best results.
Thanks for the update, Hinjima. I received this card as a gift and decided to upgrade my current RTX 2070. I was curious about the 4090 specifications but felt unsure. The in-game FPS was poor and the stuttering was really bad—definitely not what I expected. I have a spare 4K monitor, but I haven’t used it for gaming because it didn’t perform well with my RTX 2070. The monitor I have is MSI 4K with a 60Hz refresh rate, but I’m wondering if that would help. If it does, I’ll try it tomorrow and pick it up from my brother’s apartment. Thanks in advance!
CPU struggling, performance limited but still 13900K can handle 4090 at 1080p. 4090 is a powerful 4K GPU; running it in 1080p misses out on its capabilities. I recommend a 4K monitor at 144Hz, which will reduce the strain on your 5900X. The 4090 can comfortably deliver over 60fps, though 4K at 60fps is ideal. 1440p may still cause problems, so consider a 165Hz monitor or upgrading to a 4K 144Hz display.
I upgraded myself from a 2080 as well! Although the stuttering was terrible with that older CPU, the 9900k handled it fine. With a 4090 you can smoothly run 1440p at 144hz or even 4k at over 120fps. I believe a comfortable balance lies around a 27-inch monitor for 1440p at 144/165hz. The 4090 might be too much, but at that resolution and refresh rate you can enjoy high quality for years. 4k60fps will appear crisp compared to your 1080p, though the 60hz feels sluggish if you're used to 240hz. The higher refresh rate also contributes to sharper images overall. There are many affordable 1440p 144hz options available now.
Thank you so much, So you guys would better recommend upgrading to a 4K Monitor 144HZ then upgrading to a AMD Ryzen 9 7900x/DDR5 ram? And also, if i would be to stick up with 1080P , will the upgrade for the new cpu do any changes or not? This will be the last two questions i have, much appreciate the help! Thank you again!
I suggest both options. Consider upgrading to a 7700x or 7900x and enjoy a 1440p display at 144hz. If you prefer the 1080p 240hz model, a CPU upgrade will definitely help eliminate the stutter you're seeing even on the lower resolution. You can always purchase a new monitor later if you spot a good deal. Personally, I didn’t choose the 7700x over the 7900x since I mainly play games and it doesn’t make a difference regardless of budget. Here’s a screenshot from Hardware Unboxed showing an average 1440p FPS with an RTX 4090, the 7700x outperforms the 7900x because it uses just one CCD instead of two (the 7900x requires more processing time due to dual CCDs). The savings from going with the 7700x instead of the 7900x could bring you closer to a 1440p 144hz setup, and that’s why this forum exists. If you have any more questions, just let me know or send a message.
Thanks for the update, Hinjima. I plan to upgrade to a 4K 144Hz monitor and check how it fits with my current setup (AMD Ryzen 9 5900X). If I’m not satisfied, I’ll move to an AM5 model with 7700x/7900x. I mostly play AAA titles, though I enjoy competitive games like Valorant with friends—those don’t strain the CPU or GPU much. However, titles such as Sons of the Forest, Metro Exodus, Dying Light 2, RDR2, and GTA Online can be tough on stuttering. Still, a 4090 should handle them well, so I might have missed some research before buying. I’m glad you joined, since I’ve been following Linux tech and thought some helpful people would assist me! Thanks again, Hinjima/Dukesilver27!
