Yesterday while browsing the internet, one of my GPU fans began spinning extremely fast without any apparent reason. I wasn't running any demanding GPU tasks. After checking hwinfo, everything looked normal—temperatures were within range, power consumption was acceptable. However, that particular fan was spinning at 3000 RPM, which is unusually high even for this card when fully loaded. Other fans on the board operated normally. Sometimes the "agitated" fan slows down and both fans shut down as expected when idle, but after a while the problem reappears. I’m unsure what to do because the system still functions, but that loud fan is really annoying. Additionally, the card is no longer under warranty, so I shouldn’t file a return. Anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this?
Do you have any tools for managing fans? Many Nvidia cards come with two separate controllers for their fans. On my Gigabyte 3060, I could control the rear fan and both front fans individually. Are you possibly unintentionally setting one fan to its maximum speed too soon?
Are you referring just to the fan? I believe this won't function properly. After resetting the BIOS GPU, it returned to normal and I was able to adjust fan speeds in afterburner. Earlier this week the problem reappeared, now it operates between 2500-2800 rpm and fluctuates even with the CPU at 25°C, sometimes dropping to 1800 (still idle). Occasionally after powering on the PC it doesn't reach full speed immediately, then fans shut down, but after a few minutes the issue resurfaces.
no i mean the whole cooler shroud including fans, without the heatsink. i mean this is either a software issue or the card, at least the cooler part, is defective. only one way to find out! im not going to sift through ali express for hours to find the right cooler for you, but here is a good starting point... https://de.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-30...l.header.0 they *will* have a 3090 fe shroud replacement (including fans) but finding it is the tricky part, unfortunately.
I don’t understand how adjusting the fans is meant to help even when they seem to work well on their own. It’s confusing, especially when the other fan is functioning perfectly. Could you clarify what you mean by "cooler shroud"? In my language it’s similar to the radiator.
since that's how faulty electronics behave... they function until they fail... as mentioned earlier, a software problem is likely the cause. ensure no third-party programs like fancontrol are active. if the fan isn't broken, it shouldn't require manual control and should operate normally. therefore, if this persists, the GPU components might be faulty. (the main concern here is I don't know what software you're using—please share a screenshot of your startup tab for better assistance)
