For good value, I recommend a Ryzen processor. Intel’s 9900K with the 10th gen seems out of place. The 3080 is expected around September, so consider waiting if you’re purchasing a CPU then check for any Ryzen 4000 updates.

Either or will work fine I reckon, but I'd wait till the 10th gen reviews come out to see if there is a big enough performance jump to justify going up a CPU generation, depends on the cost too...

It would function perfectly fine. Ensure the 9900K operates at 5GHz across all cores. From what I understand, most units can handle this with adequate cooling. Although my setup uses an older 5820K in overclocked mode, it performs well with a GTX 1080Ti. It may not be the top performer anymore, but it remains one of the fastest available near the RTX 2080 lineup. I don’t see any issue letting it match the RTX 3080 when it launches. It also provides enough cores to handle modern, multicore games. The 10th generation isn’t a huge leap unless you look at stock performance with better Turbo algorithms. When you push it manually, that difference fades and it still keeps up without major trouble. Since you likely already own the 9900K, you’ll also save money.

Stick with Intel alone? Not so much. AMD delivers solid performance at a fraction of the cost. When you look beyond gaming, its strengths shine in various areas. The 4000 series also outperforms Intel’s cutting-edge nodes.

Consider Zen 3 first—it arrives before the RTX 3000 and may provide significantly improved performance compared to the 10900 or 9900 models.

Upgrading to a 9900k wastes resources unless you require the raw core count for parallel processing. Those limited frames you gain become pointless when you must replace an entire platform worth around 1000€ just to achieve that. Better allocate those funds toward another graphics card upgrade after the RTX 3000 series, or save them for a bigger platform upgrade in the future. This 9900k will serve you well until AMD introduces the AM5 platform, and if conditions are right, Intel might release a new CPU then. Until then, try maximizing the clock speed of this chip—you're good to go.

To compare their performance, I use specialized software like FireStrike or TimeSpy. Performance peaks around 2040 MHz, matching the threshold where 4K at 3840x1600 becomes challenging. At 5K resolution and higher, it shouldn’t impact me, but this trend could become relevant soon. Previously, my GTX 1080 Ti was sufficient, but now the RTX 2080 Ti demands more power. The 10th generation architecture is similar to the 9th, though with more cores; gaming performance isn’t significantly affected. Overclocking at 5GHz didn’t yield major gains in my tests, though a 5.3MHz might help. I’m leaning toward a 10th-gen CPU but fear a disappointment risk over 50%. The upgrade mainly benefits modded titles that use fewer cores.
