Hello all,

I’m dealing with a persistent problem with my RTX 2070 Super. I’m trying to determine if the fault lies with the graphics card, the motherboard, or the power supply unit. I’ll share all the steps I’ve taken and what I’ve noticed so far.

System details:
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming
- GPU: RTX 2070 Super ASUS
- PSU: 650W ROG Strix 650
- Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
- CPU: Intel Core i7-9700K @ 3.60GHz
- RAM: 2x Gigabyte DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600) at 2600 Hz (2X8GB)

This configuration has been in use for four years without any problems. The issue began a few weeks ago. Initially, everything functions normally—booting into Windows, browsing, streaming works well for short periods and up to several hours. However, once the system starts, it abruptly freezes. The GPU fans increase to full speed, yet there’s no display output. To stop the machine, I have to keep pressing the power button until it powers off.

Inside games, the experience is identical: loading is smooth up to the main menu, but once inside the game world, the screen turns black, fans reach maximum speed, and the system freezes.

This started with Fallout 76. I could play for about 45 minutes before the problem occurred. It then spread to other titles like Enshrouded and Teddy’s Haven, usually within a few minutes of launching.

Notably, right when the screen goes black and fans hit 100%, a distinct metallic clicking noise comes from the GPU. It’s just one quick “click” before the issue starts.

Additionally, entering safe mode with the GPU connected consistently triggered the same failure within minutes.

My attempts so far:
- Removed and reinstalled the GPU.
- Used a brand-new PCIe power cable, ensuring all connections were secure.
- Switched from one cable to two separate ones (the 2070 uses a 6-pin and an 8-pin connector).
- Tested different PSU ports, even using two ports simultaneously (recommended to use one cable per port).
- Ran the PC without the GPU for several days, relying solely on integrated graphics—remained stable.
- Deleted and reinstalled NVIDIA drivers via DDU, then tried a known stable version.
- Performed AIDA64 stress tests (without GPU) for over an hour with no crashes; CPU temp peaked at 81°C, everything stable.

Other actions I haven’t tried:
- Running the GPU under stress.
- Testing it on another PC.
- Trying a different GPU in my system.

Anyone else have encountered this exact scenario? Specifically, the sudden black screen, full GPU fan speed, and unresponsiveness? I’d greatly appreciate any guidance on further diagnostics or BIOS adjustments before giving up.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming
What BIOS version are you using for your motherboard?
Power Supply: 650W ROG Strix 650
How long has your PSU been in the system? 4 years?
I ran the PC without the GPU for several days, relying only on the built-in graphics. It remained stable for hours without any problems.
Please try moving your GPU to another functional system with a more powerful PSU and see if the issue persists.

Hi. I attempted to locate another PC but wasn't successful.
Still, after opening the GPU, cleaning it, and replacing the thermal paste, it's functioning properly.
That was truly a miracle.
Thanks for your help, though! 😊
