Hi, right now I’m working from home because of COVID and my office PC is connected through a VPN. I know it’s being monitored, but I’m worried about possible tracking of my personal device and router traffic. Sometimes I notice unusual slowdowns in speed that didn’t happen before. I connect my office PC to the phone via USB tethering, and the phone is linked to the wife. I try not to connect them at the same time, but after work I disconnect the PC. If they can access my router, could they still monitor traffic even when the office PC is off?

Using a standard router without packet capture tools can make it tricky to diagnose issues, but in practice, most devices operate normally. If you're concerned, many routers include a guest mode that prevents external communication from home devices. Consider moving your work computers to the guest network.

Your TP-Link router at $15 is simple, but checking for firmware issues usually involves looking at logs or manufacturer tools. PRTG is great for capturing network traffic and analyzing packets, so it can definitely help with that.

You’re using a basic home network and an office computer connected via VPN for remote work. It’s simple enough that most people wouldn’t expect much monitoring from the provider, unless they’re worried about personal devices. If the VPN drops during your session, you’ll lose access to the rest of the network instantly. To improve security, consider upgrading with a good router, enabling firewall rules, and isolating your work machine in a separate network zone so it only communicates over the WAN.
