Router assigns IP addresses irregularly, skipping them every few days.
Hey there, newbie here. I’m just starting out with setting up my home network and running into some odd problems. Any advice would be greatly appreciated—thanks a million! Windows 10 Home Desktop Hardware: X99Pro/USB3.1 i7-5820K GTX 1080 32GB RAM Samsung Evo 870 Network setup matters A bit before the problem began - the router was plugged straight into the motherboard via a Cat5e cable. After the issue popped up - it was connected directly to a TP-Link TG-3468 Ethernet card in a 16x slot. A few days prior, there was a local FIOS outage in my area. Once service resumed, my browser loaded slowly. I ran speed tests from multiple sites and saw downloads around 900MBps but uploads barely above 1MBps. All other devices—Macs, wired PCs, phones—were fine. I tried standard troubleshooting: checked ipconfig, reset drivers, reinstalled network adapter, restarted the router, even factory reset it. The provider also did similar steps and reset the ONT. Eventually, I bought a new TP-Link card from MicroCenter and swapped it into a 16x slot. It worked! While doing final checks, turning off IPv6 in the adapter settings fixed my upload speed. I’m not sure if that setting really matters, but I didn’t like the workaround. Now every couple of days my Ethernet drops—card shows solid green on desktop, but it can’t connect to the router. The Wi-Fi still works perfectly, though. It looks like the router isn’t recognizing my PC via Ethernet. All IP and DNS settings are auto, and even after running ipconfig /all it didn’t show an address for my card. The only fix was a full router reboot. Any thoughts? Is there a way to make the router remember my desktop’s Ethernet connection automatically? Thanks for your help!
Thanks for the feedback from @Falcon1986 and @wseaton. I’ll give it another shot when the router forgets my desktop again. I’m not sure if it’s a port problem, but I’ve moved it to different ports already. ^ My latest post was never submitted with apologies for missing my thanks. But here’s an update! I changed both the LAN port and uninstalled all drivers in Device Manager, yet nothing improved. I’m sharing some screenshots of what I see on my machine—apologies, I might be blocking things but I’m not sure if that helps. I can post this because I still have internet via Wi-Fi; just the Ethernet connection is acting up.
