Using a Root system on a ZFS mirror makes recovery tricky if the boot drive fails. The drive must have a boot partition in FAT format, which limits ZFS restoration options.

It varies by distribution but usually isn't too complicated, provided the root partition remains intact. Should it be broken, you must restore it before proceeding with the boot setup. If just the root partition is affected, you can start from a live system and switch into your root partition using chroot, then reinstall grub or similar components.
