ROG Strix Z790-E supports PCIe 5.0 and offers SSD lane sharing capabilities.
Hello, I'm considering the Asus ROG STRIX Z790-E for my project. While reviewing the manual, I saw that when the M.2_1 slot holds an SSD, the PCIEX16(G5) can only operate at x8. It seems the M.2_1 slot is the sole M.2 port supporting PCIe 5.0 x4. If future 5Gbps M.2 SSDs arrive, would placing one in that slot restrict my graphics card in the PCIEX16(G) to x8? This is important. Can I fit my graphics card into a lower PCIe 4.0 x16 port instead? Thanks!
It's a constraint of the LGA 1700 design when using PCIe Gen 5 SSDs. The impact is minimal—just a slight dip in frame rates for high-end cards like the 4090. Still, it's not a major issue. Generally, the performance drop isn't significant enough to be a big concern. Most users won't notice much difference, so this slot might not be worth considering. Lower slots operate on PCIe 4.0 x4, which would likely result in even poorer speeds compared to the x8 slot.
You're considering whether the $100 premium for this board justifies its benefits compared to the ROG STRIX 790-F, especially since the latter lacks Gen 5 SSD support.
