Could not locate the information on Belkin's official website, but discovered it elsewhere. No liability if any issues occurred.

I downloaded software from Softpedia multiple times without encountering any viruses before. As I mentioned, I cannot ensure it is completely safe, especially since the "updated firmware" isn't listed on the official site.

It is actually more serious than you imagine. It would be great if the manufacturer did not alter the hardware but kept the name unchanged.
There are five different versions of that router. The initial models use a completely different wifi chipset compared to the later ones. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact differences between versions like 4 and 5.
You can find more details here: https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/Belkin_F9K1113_v1
You’ll need to locate the appropriate firmware for your specific model.
What improvements do you think they would implement?
Updating the wifi functionality itself isn't feasible, as it's mostly a hardware aspect and there have been minimal changes to what is now referred to as wifi5.
Belkin has long been recognized as a "value" brand, and their router software offers only basic features.
What kind of features would you actually desire? Sometimes simple AI capabilities are preferable over unnecessary software complexity.
In many cases, the only commonly used function is the straightforward NAT feature, which lets the router share a single public IP address with your internal devices.

Belkin has inherent limitations, but I would disable any feature you won’t actually use. The most important exposure comes from enabling router administration over the internet. Since you rarely manage the router once it’s running, you really shouldn’t allow Wi-Fi administration either. The newer routers concern me more. A few can only be set up through the cloud, meaning all your router settings and passwords are kept on a third-party server. Others rely on Alexa for voice control. I don’t understand why this is being implemented. For most users you simply change the admin and Wi-Fi password once and never interact with the device again. Why they add so much unnecessary complexity for such basic functions is unclear to me. The remote admin feature was enabled by default, which allowed ASUS routers to be hacked about six months ago.

Even with the genuine firmware, you'll primarily receive bug and security updates. Manufacturers typically release only new versions for the same model and never introduce features to older ones.
