Seeking advice on what might be causing issues with my setup. The 5800X3D I installed about two months ago to replace the 5900X is overheating a lot. It usually stays around 91°C during intense gaming, especially for resource-heavy titles. Even short sessions of about 20 minutes show CPU usage barely exceeding 30% according to MSI Afterburner. Here are the details:
- Case: Fractal Design R6
- CPU: 5800X3D
- GPU: MSI Suprim X 4090 (default)
- MOBO: ASUS Crosshair Hero VIII X570 ATX
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance 3600MHz (2 x 16GB)
- Cooler: Corsair H150i Pro XT (with Artic Silver 5 paste)
- Storage: Available
- PSU: BeQuiet StraightPower 11 1000W
Recent attempts to fix it include:
- BIOS update
- Re-pasting and seating the cooler
- Applying -30 core offset in PBO2 tuner
- Adjusting fan settings to avoid noise
- Testing new thermal paste (planning to try it soon)
I’ve attached screenshots of the monitoring data and fan curves from iCUE and Fan Control. All fans are Noctua, so I’m not sure if that’s the problem. Any suggestions? Hopefully it’s still under warranty, unlike the AIO system.
Including the attached images appears to be missing. Please ensure they are uploaded or provide an alternative method to share them. Additionally, note that even when the CPU is idle, temperatures can often exceed 70°C.
It seems the cooler is not performing well. My NHD15 maintains temperatures below 83°C during gaming. Typically it stays under 77°C in most scenarios, though it can rise to 81°C if the room temperature exceeds 72°F. This happens even with 60-100% fan speed, which remains quiet enough for smooth gameplay. I’d check the cooler first instead of focusing on the chip, as it’s functioning properly.
Verify your AIO mount. Is there any sound of the pump operating?
The cooler is just two years old, isn't it? Switching between quiet and high pump speeds in iCUE makes the pump sound change, and RPM increases as shown.
I agree with the previous point too. Please verify your AIO carefully, ensure it's positioned correctly, and confirm the pump is operating properly. Also, check how long the cooler has been in use. With the Hyper 212 Evo, the temperature stays below 82°C (except during Cinebench).
Adjusting pump speed doesn't affect idle temperatures, while boosting fan speeds does
I didn’t want to tally my chickens yet, but I figured swapping the exhaust position from top-mounted to front-mounted in the pull setup would help. After a lot of precise adjustments in a tight situation, I powered up Witcher 3 next gen—played it earlier today and saw the CPU hit 91°C in just minutes. Miraculously, now it reads a cool 65°C! How could that happen?
