Rift S Vibes
Rift S Vibes
I've been using the Rift S for a while now, and it's been having some issues lately. I recently moved into my girlfriend's apartment, and it's been acting strange since then. I took good care of it during the move, so that shouldn't be the problem. The main change is that I switched to a new PC. Before that, it ran on a GTX 960, which wasn't great, followed by an older 3570K i5, and before that, a GTX 780. It stopped working during a Dota session, but otherwise it was fine. Now I'm not using a new motherboard—I have an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, a 3060 Ti, and overall performance is solid. However, it keeps jittering randomly, which is odd given the environment. I live in a basement with mostly non-reflective walls and windows, unlike my previous condo with big windows, mirrors, and TVs. Why would the Rift S be so bad now? I checked the USB port it's connected to—it goes straight to a 3.0 port on the motherboard, while all other ports use a hub with its own power. It’s a DisplayPort connection to the GPU. It randomly jitters left and right, almost like shifting perspective between eyes. Playing Beat Saber is really frustrating. Also, I’m wondering if there are other good VR headsets that don’t depend on the OCLL software—it would be a big help. The current setup auto-logs in, but I can’t set it up for my girlfriend to use directly. Thanks ahead of time.
Check if your GPU, chipset drivers, and Windows updates are current. Ensure the new play area provides sufficient lighting for cameras and has adequate wall or room setup for accurate tracking. Consider reinstalling Oculus software and rerunning the room configuration. If login problems persist, verify whether you switched accounts from Oculus to Meta or attempted a password reset. For headsets other than Oculus/Meta, options include Pico 4 (subject to location) or SteamVR devices like Vive Pro 2, Pimax, or Valve Index—though these tend to be more costly and often need base station tracking. Rumors suggest Valve’s upcoming VR release is near, but timing remains uncertain.
GPU, Windows, and drivers are all current, and even with my RTX 3060 Ti I still get updates. I have plenty of lighting now. My old setup had much less light. The new spotlights might be too close to the camera and cause glare. I should use floor lamps instead next time. I modified the Oculus setup for a new user, but it blocked me from logging back. This is my first fresh install on the account, so it shouldn’t be an issue. I’ll wait for the new Valve VR release. The RIFT S has its own limitations. My controllers are badly damaged—just tape and epoxy keep them together. Beat Saber and non-replaceable controllers aren’t great. Support didn’t offer any replacement options... =_= Thanks for the details!
