Hey everyone! I'm excited to get my PC upgraded once the Ryzen 5000 parts are back in stock. I'm thinking about adding RGB lighting to my case for colorful cables and components, but I'm a bit confused about how everything connects—especially RAM, motherboards, LEDs, and fans. I plan to switch to a Ryzen board with either a 450/470 or 550/570 socket. Since my current board is a Z77, it's clear I have no idea how RGB headers work on different boards, which makes me wonder about compatibility. Can I use Trident, Ballistix, or Corsair RAM? Should they be compatible with the RGB setup? Also, what about LED strips? If I buy an ICUE from Corsair, will it work with any of these boards? Thanks!

Explore different RGB technologies first to clarify your needs. Standard RGB uses green, blue, and red lights (or similar combinations). Hi, thanks for your feedback! You're right about focusing on cost instead of raw performance. Right now I'm just planning to upgrade one component at a time, which makes budgeting easier. I'm not sure yet what specific parts I want, but without any stock options it's tough to decide. At the moment I'm thinking of a mid-range black MMO board—maybe MSI A-Pro or Tomahawk, or Gigabyte Gaming X with B550 chips and a Ryzen 5 5600. I'm not after a powerhouse, just something solid for about 6 to 8 years. Would an X470 suit you better? And do you know any good RGBW addressable strips that could influence my choice? Appreciate the help!
I'm not very familiar with the latest technology, so I'd take some advice or wait until someone more knowledgeable speaks up. But regarding the motherboard, I would definitely choose a B550 or higher and avoid the X470 even though it's decent. (for Ryzen 5xxx models) I do remember the Gigabyte Aurox X470 I had—it has three different RGB header types. However, when I tried connecting my addressable lights, they only displayed a static color and didn't let me control individual lights. Overall, I find Gigabyte's software and RGB setup to be very basic. I'm not sure if others have better setups. I don't know any good RGBW strips either. I bought mine as a cheap option from China, hehehehe. (I even built my own controller using an Arduino, still connected to the PC, but a decent controller opens up possibilities and ambilight effects are now manageable.)
It's unclear whether purchasing RAM compatible with Mystic Light will affect your ability to change its color if you have a motherboard without it.
