RGB hub for connecting to the motherboard
Hey there, I have a Fractal Torrent that comes with the RGB fan hub and got myself a Gigabyte x670e aorus elite ax with Noctua NH-D15. I've built the PC and all is fine, except the case fans, and I think the issue is that I did not connect them properly, but am not sure how/why. I tried a couple things that felt safe to try, but none of them worked and now I'm here looking for some help What I currently have set up is, I plugged both front and bottom case fans into the hub, ordered 1 through 5, connected power with SATA and connected all the fans to each other with the first and last one having one connection loose, basically like in the manual. One thing that is not like in the manual, and which I'm not sure if is causing the issues here, is that I connected the hub not to CPU_FAN but to the SYS_FAN3 header. Basically my CPU cooler doesn't have a connection long enough to go all the way to the hub, so I figured I could just plug the hub to a different header (again, this could be the cause of the issue, not sure if what I did is okay). Besides the motherboard header, nothing comes to mind really, this is my first time connecting the rgb fans, I think I did it correctly, but am not certain. One more thing to note is that the fans do spin, they are just going what I assume is full blast
3-pin ARGB only handles the lighting features of the fans, not the power or speed control. The actual operation is managed via separate 3-pin or 4-pin connections. It’s recommended to connect at least one fan (or an AIO pump, etc.) to the CPU_FAN header. Omitting it usually causes a missing error about CPU fan or cooler. You can link the hub to another header, but any CPU_OPT or SYS_FAN pins don’t need to match the CPU_FAN header. The hub essentially displays RPM data from FAN1 back to the motherboard’s FAN1 through FAN9, using PWM control via the 'GND FG PWM MB' pin. The power for these fans comes from the 'POWER GND/12V' pin on the hub, not directly from the motherboard fan header. If fans reach full speed, ensure the device connected to FAN1 is a 4-pin fan—3-pin fans lack PWM control, so all connections through the hub will run at maximum speed. Verify that the motherboard’s 'GND FG PWM MB' header is set to PWM mode in the BIOS. ARGB headers support up to 5V and 5A; for example, with each fan rated at 0.5A, you could theoretically link up to ten fans using a single ARGB header.
I understand, NH-D15 is connected to the CPU_FAN and it’s functioning properly. The case fans are all linked through the hub to SYS_FAN3, and adjusting fan settings in the motherboard software affects them all. I’m having trouble with the RGB controls—my reference manual shows a different setup than what I see now. I only realized this after checking a physical copy of the manual, which looks different from what I thought.
Avoiding chains, you're within the Amp limit for parallel work. I'd opt for a system fan plug just to keep things clear.
The ARGB header delivers power and signal color information to linked or connected devices. Follow the arrows carefully as shown; reversing them can damage the ARGB header or LEDs. Remember, a 3-pin ARGB setup uses 5V, while a 4-pin RGB requires 12V. Avoid forcing a 3-pin ARGB device into a 4-pin RGB header and vice versa. Doing so risks losing the essential functionality.
