I'm setting up an old machine I received for free. It has a dual-core 3GHz Pentium 4 processor and 384 MB of RAM, along with an SF2/661FX (V2.2) motherboard. I want to avoid buying a new system, even though it might not be great, because I'm trying to save money. Let me know if you can help.

Only some Pentium 4 models had HT support. There are also Pentium processors that aren't P4s but still have two cores, such as the Pentium D, Dual Core, and Core Series versions.

It would likely work better for this situation.

I reached the decision it was a Pentium 4 since the BIOS confirmed it, and my diagnostic software displaying a dual-core CPU indicated that.

It might be a P4 with Hyperthreading or it could be misreading the CPU. I was running a VM using Windows 95 and it mistakenly recognized my A10 5750m as a genuine Intel Pentium.

I considered XP, but the setup fails because it doesn’t satisfy the necessary criteria, and I don’t own a working copy to install. Any suggestions for getting one?

It seems the system was running both cores at full capacity during the memory test, which suggests it isn't being misidentified.

Thank you! I'll check with the school's tech department to see if they can provide a copy.

Perhaps Linux or an older Windows version such as Windows 98.
