I haven't played games seriously since I was a teenager, but I've been playing casually on my laptop lately. I'm considering setting up my own system and thinking about getting the 6600K or R9 390 (or GTX 970). I want a decent gaming rig with good frame rates. My budget only lets me afford a 60Hz display, though I'm worried high FPS might cause screen tearing. Back then it wasn't an issue, so I'm not sure what options exist—should I keep V-Sync active and cap FPS, or should I upgrade to a 144Hz monitor?

I believe certain games are more problematic than others, but I don’t mind the glitches unless you’re actively searching for them.

Many people say once you hit 144Hz you can't go back, but I've never used it so 60 works for me. Screen tearing isn't really an issue anymore, but if it does and you choose 60Hz, just keep v-sync enabled and you should be okay.

I would choose a Gsync monitor right away.

I rarely rely on V-Sync.

Typically games limit themselves to around 60 frames per second, but many new titles do that: MGS:V, batman arkham knight, witcher 3.

They lack caps but offer a settings option to adjust your FPS. It generally ranges from 30 to 60 with unlimited limits.

With MGS:V it's limited to 60 FPS (can be unlocked but is hidden inside the game files), Arkham Knight has caps at 30, 60, and 90 FPS, while Witcher 3 allows unlocking the frame rate but keeps the lock active.

I haven't seen 144Hz and might never encounter it, but I don’t care about a 60FPS limit—it’s just the 30FPS caps that wear me down. Those are uncommon these days, but developers make mistakes all the time. *cough* Iron Galaxy
