Retrieving data from an older HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer HDD
Hey, this sounds like a tricky situation. I've located an old HDD from my N40L micro server that I no longer own, and I'm facing problems getting data from it. I'm connecting it to a USB3 dock with my MacBook Pro Intel 2018, using Windows 11 with the latest Parallels version. The drive appears to work in Disk Management as active and healthy, but the file system shows as 'RAW'. When exploring external drives (assuming Windows Server Home on E, data on F), errors pop up. I've tried mounting it in Ubuntu, which seems to work but still shows an unknown filesystem. No recent writes have been recorded, so I'm planning to run Recuva next—hopefully nothing critical is lost. Let me know if this helps!
Cheers, Matt
What you're observing resembles a disconnected RAID disk from a storage array. When a drive is part of a RAID configuration, it must be reconfigured as a new array on the server controller.
Thanks for the quick responses. I’ve explored a plugin called Drive Bender and it seemed like a good sign—possibly indicating a raid array was used before. Rebuilding the array isn’t an option, so clearing the drive might be the best move. A few years ago, I began using a script to record folder structures in file-level backups, which helps me track everything on each storage device. Cheers, Matt
