I recently finished a new build containing a 4970k and dual GTX 970s in SLI. I haven't done much gaming until now but I've realised that after 2, maybe 3 hours of my system just being switched on, gaming performance degrades horribly, and before this occurs I can game at max settings perfectly. I'm talking horrendous stuttering and lag, and awful framerates. It feels like I'm gaming on my 6 year old laptop, and turning down graphics settings doesn't help. I know this isn't a cooling issue, because not only is the CPU is watercooled and the build has great airflow, but all I have to do is restart for games to run well again. I've mainly been playing RE: Revelations 2 which I know has optimization issues but to be honest, just about every game should run at +60FPS on max at 1080p with this build, so I'm worried that some of my parts are faulty. If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

You haven't eliminated thermals unless you rely on monitoring tools. A reboot is sufficient for a CPU or GPU to cool down.

nvidia drivers problem? I faced an issue with a 970 graphics card. In battlefield 4 it worked, but once the game started, FPS dropped to 25 and stayed low until I restarted the system. It required a full OS reset to fix properly. The issue wasn't limited to battlefield 4.

Do you have a consistent flow in your writing? Are you opting for a custom water cooling system or an all-in-one design?

It seems like there might be several possible causes for the issue. There could be many different factors at play.

The main issue that leads to these problems consistently is overheating. This happens not only at high settings but also when playing at lower resolutions. Adjusting the thermal paste or ensuring proper cooling can help maintain stable temperatures. Computers naturally warm up over time, and inadequate cooling may cause them to slow down if temperatures rise too much.

There might be a caching problem when playing games on an HDD.

Use GPU-z for background thermal plots while playing. It tracks core and memory clock speeds, helping you detect throttling linked to the 970 temperatures.
