I've recently acquired an RTX 3090 Suprim X and found my frame rates lag behind others with similar configurations. For instance, in Fortnite I'm consistently around 300 FPS on low+performance settings, while many others exceed 700 FPS under the same conditions. Additionally, my GPU isn't performing optimally in several games, causing occasional slowdowns and stuttering. My system setup includes an I9 9900K with the RTX 3090, a 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO motherboard (XMP enabled), an 850W PSU, two 2TB NVMe drives, and a mix of SSDs and HDDs. I've been told my CPU/RAM might be limiting GPU performance, especially since my board uses PCIe 3 rather than the newer PCIe 4. The manufacturer suggests the RTX 3090 could still benefit from an upgrade. Would this be a wise decision to boost my GPU? Edited July 10, 2022 by Stokesy117

The CPU and RAM are limiting your performance. The PCIe 3 connection also restricts speed. To unlock full GPU power, you should replace these components. I currently have an R5 3600, but my RAM is 3800 OC, which still helps boost the CPU a little, even though it only supports 3200 XMP.

The CPU and RAM are limiting your performance. The PCIe 3 connection also restricts speed. To unlock full GPU power, you should replace these components. I currently have an R5 3600, but my RAM is 3800 OC, which still helps boost the CPU a little, even though it only supports 3200 XMP.

the issue comes from low configurations. Try increasing resolution to 1440p and boost graphics settings. Performance should return to normal and the CPU won’t be limiting the GPU. The 3200 MHz is sufficient for most systems, as I’ve mentioned before. It’s mostly about showing off rather than practical use. Overclocking can give a good power efficiency gain, but using someone else’s setup will capture around 95% of that advantage. For a free speed boost, use the burner tool and input your desired frequency (like 3800MHz C14). Just run it and fine-tune if needed because hardware varies. You can also reduce power consumption by setting all cores to a fixed frequency and voltage—something like 1.2/1.25V with 4.8-5g. This makes the PC use less energy, making OC less wasteful since these chips are pushed beyond their intended limits.

For gaming, a 12700k/5800x3D offers excellent value. The 5800x3D performs better than the 5950x. The 12700k surpasses both options. At 1080p, a 12600k would make them compete fairly at half the price.

Consider switching to an AMD system with a Ryzen 9 5950X. If you prefer staying longer, the upcoming Ryzen CPUs later this year could be a better option. For motherboard and RAM choices, let me know your preferences and I can recommend specific models.

The CPU becomes even less important. A 12600k model remains affordable at half the price. Video content is better suited for the 12700k since it's more recent than the 12600k. The 12700k review includes the 12600k, but the 12600k review lacks the 12700k version.
