Restore Windows 10 after a failed upgrade from Windows 8.1 due to corruption.
I need to understand how to enable Windows 10 after a failed upgrade from Windows 8.1 because of a corrupt installation. I didn’t perform a clean install and upgraded using the media creation tool, which caused the installation to fail. Now my original Windows 8.1 key won’t work for Windows 10. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!
The actual key shifts during upgrades, you know. Here’s the plan:
1. Set up a virtual machine.
2. Install 8.1 using your 8.1 key.
3. Upgrade to 10 on the VM.
4. Leverage Belarc Advisor to obtain the Windows 10 key.
5. Apply the Windows 10 key for activation.
6. Remove the VM afterward.
7. Success. Your initial 8.1 Pro key becomes the 10 Pro key post-upgrade.

Did you experience Windows 10 activation problems before or during setup?
It mentions needing to turn Windows on before making account changes. This time I skipped the ID and used a local host. I'm trying to activate Windows 10 Pro. My previous OS was 8.1 Pro, and I originally got Windows 10 activated once using the 8.1 key for upgrades with a media creation tool. That key won't work now since I'm already on Windows 10. My Microsoft account stopped working after the last time, and everything seems restricted.
