Restarting Windows 8.1 from an original equipment manufacturer installation
Restarting Windows 8.1 from an original equipment manufacturer installation
Hey there... I'm upgrading my old Dell desktop with new parts. I'm installing a new motherboard and SSD, and it still has Windows 8 pre-installed. I have the OEM product key in the BIOS. My gaming PC runs Windows 8.1 and I have its product key. The question is: because I'm swapping the motherboard and doing a clean install, should Windows activation fail since it needs the key in BIOS?
1. Can I run my Windows 8.1 DVD to install Windows and then activate using the OEM key?
2. Is there a method to modify the product key in BIOS before installing Windows?
Let me know if you need more info. I really appreciate your help! Have a great day! Thanks, Arun

I understand the method to retrieve the product key. Just confirming whether the OEM product key will function properly. Thanks.
I also set up an SSD with a fresh Windows 8 installation on a Windows 8 laptop, and I didn't need to activate it since it was already there.
I'm updating the MOBO now. Because the key is stored in the BIOS of the previous version, it won't activate by itself. That's the issue I'm facing. I can't download the Windows 8.1 ISO with the OEM Product Key either. I was hoping to confirm that using the OEM key would work for activation. Hope this isn't confusing you.
OEM keys work on 15 distinct machines prior to needing a replacement. While setting up, apply the key you possess, then upon launching Windows navigate to the activation section and select call support. Adhere to the instructions; activation will occur in about 5 minutes.
