Restarting Windows 8 again.
Restarting Windows 8 again.
I just bought a second-hand Windows 8 laptop from a friend. It needs a complete wipe and fresh installation. Midway through, I encountered an error stating the product key can’t be used for a retail version. The version listed is right on the Microsoft site. My key is the original one from the laptop’s sticker. I found ten different solutions online, but I’m not sure which is correct. I’m hoping the community can help me figure this out.
For future use, you can generate recovery or reinstall media from any Windows 8/8.1 or possibly 7 machine. Obtain the setup file from Microsoft and select "install later from USB" during installation. Alternatively, utilize the built-in restore feature in Windows 8/8.1 to revert the system to its original state.
Are you looking for other sources? I've been searching since yesterday and keep getting the message that the file was downloaded too frequently within a certain period. This is the approach I usually take using Win7. Even with retail keys, it hasn't caused any issues before. Wind8 seems to behave differently in this situation.
You might reach out to Microsoft or the laptop manufacturer to report the problem. I’ve handled this with Microsoft before, and as long as the original key is valid, they usually resolve it for me.
