This could sound silly, but since you're using Mac and just starting with Windows, it's worth checking. If you needed to reinstall Windows 8 on a drive that already had Windows 8.1 and everything set up, would you lose your files?

On Windows 8, you can retain all your files and it will prompt you about choosing a full installation or installing while preserving existing files.
