He recently got a free iMac A1311 with an i3. He wants to reset the drive and install OS X 10.7 Lion or later, but he doesn’t have the password. Neither of them is familiar with Macs, so they’re unsure how to proceed. Someone can assist with reinstalling OS X? The only available disk is for 10.5 Leopard, and booting from that needs the password, which they don’t have either.

1. power on the machine and keep the "apple" key and "s" pressed.
2. observe the terminal output until it displays 3.
3. release both keys.
4. input "/sbin/mount -uaw" without quotes.
5. hit enter.
6. enter "/var/db/.applesetupdone" without quotes.
7. press enter again.
8. type "reboot" without quotes.
9. finalize with a press of enter.

Yes, there should be a space between "mount" and "-uaw".

Yes, and if you ever need to confirm, simply click and drag in the area where you think a space exists. If it turns out to be highlighted without any character, it's a space.
