Restart the system and choose the correct boot device
I'm encountering the "reboot and select proper boot device" prompt while attempting to start my PC. It seems the standard troubleshooting steps aren't resolving the issue. Recently, I bought a Ryzen 7 5800x from a friend and exchanged it for a Ryzen 5 3600x two days ago. When I powered on the new machine, it failed to boot and I couldn't access the BIOS. I realized I hadn't updated the BIOS after swapping CPUs. My ASUS B450 motherboard should have supported the 5800x if the BIOS was current. Ideally, I just needed to reinstall the old CPU and update the BIOS. Interestingly, my previous system worked perfectly before the change. After removing the new processor and installing the old one, it booted normally for about an hour. Then, when I entered BIOS settings, I received the same error message. This puzzled me because everything looked identical to its prior state. I searched online and found that updating the BIOS should have made the board compatible. After hours of research and attempts at fixes, the PC still wouldn't boot into Windows. I eventually decided to revert to the old configuration and bought a new motherboard the next day. I spent time reconfiguring everything, but the problem persisted. I even tried using my roommate's M.2 drive to see if it would work, but it didn’t. Eventually, I concluded that the motherboard might be outdated and unsuitable for the newer chipset. I gave up and went to Best Buy to get a replacement. The process was lengthy and frustrating, involving multiple changes and no clear solution. I'm now considering giving up and taking the machine to a repair shop. I really need suggestions or alternatives. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas or solutions—I'd appreciate it. Here are my current details: CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x GPU: Gigabyte 3060TI MB: MSI B550 Gaming Plus RAM: 32 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 PSU: EVGA 750 G5 Supernova CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition
Thank you for your message. You've already explored several options, including switching between CMS and UEFI, attempting a fresh Windows installation, and testing multiple drives. It seems you haven't found a solution yet. Since you're facing challenges with PCI storage setup, consider reaching out to your hardware manufacturer or a professional technician for further assistance. Also, double-checking BIOS settings might help resolve the issue. You're not alone in this—keep trying different approaches!
This thread discusses enabling M.2 as a bootable drive on an MSI B550 gaming PC. It references a similar discussion from another forum for context.
Ensure a clean Windows setup to avoid formatting issues. Have you checked if CSM is disabled? Also, confirm whether your M.2 drives are NVMe or SATA—this matters for the correct slot. In BIOS, can you view the connected drives?
