Lately, I’ve encountered a frustrating problem with video games. It began after playing Dark Souls, followed by Skyrim and Binding of Isaac. Unexpectedly, at some point during extended gameplay (after several hours where my save files functioned properly), my save data would inexplicably remain unchanged. Specifically, any saves I possessed at the time of this occurrence would persist indefinitely. I could attempt to replace, delete, or reset the save file; it would always reappear. Creating a new save and resetting the game would also result in the previous save vanishing. Initially, I suspected a problem with Steam Cloud, so I experimented by both disabling cloud syncing and playing without an internet connection, but nothing resolved the issue. This suggests a local problem, and my only remaining theory was adjusting the save file folder permissions to not be read-only, which had no effect. Therefore, I’m seeking advice on this matter. I am using Windows 10.

I believe I’ve discovered the resolution. Apparently, Windows Defender was interfering, despite my exclusion of the documents folder. Simply disabling it has resolved the issue and saving is now functioning correctly.

Regarding *The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim*, there are three methods for preserving your progress.

Automatic Saving occurs automatically when transitioning to a new area – such as an underground cavern or building – and may also be triggered based on your configured saving preferences. A Quicksave is initiated by pressing F5 within the game, while a Manual Save can be created through the in-game menu. Each save type utilizes distinct file names. Both Quicksaves and Autosaves maintain a backup of the preceding version of their respective file. A single Quicksave file represents the latest iteration, accompanied by three most recent Autosave files, alongside all manually generated saves.

These files are stored locally on your device, with backups automatically uploaded to your Steam account in the Cloud – unless this feature has been disabled.

*Skyrim* also offers three ways to restore a saved game. “Continue” loads the latest save file, regardless of its type, upon initiating the game. Alternatively, you can "Load a Game" from any of the three save formats—either at the beginning of the game or while in-game via the menu. Finally, “Quickload” directly accesses and loads the Quicksave file.

Are you referring to an instance where, after extended gameplay, new save files become inaccessible through any of these methods, and subsequently deleted saves reappear unexpectedly? Have you examined the date stamps associated with your save files?

Although I didn’t verify the timestamps, the filenames and data matched perfectly. Furthermore, I am unable to create new save files under any circumstances, and previously deleted saves reappear each time.

There are two approaches to removing Skyrim save data. Within the game itself, through the menu and subsequent "Load" option, you can utilize the 'X' key for deletion. Alternatively, external methods involving Windows File Explorer, command prompt commands, or specialized software can be employed. Considering these methods, what’s your strategy if the recovered files reappear? Is sufficient storage space available on the drive where the data is stored? Furthermore, are we discussing Skyrim Special Edition or the initial release of the game?

I believe I’ve located the fix. Windows Defender, inexplicably, was the cause, despite my exclusion of the documents folder. Disabling it has resolved the issue and saving is now functioning correctly.
