Resolved: Frequent game interruptions, incorrect texture display, persistent audio loops, and volume issues.
For a considerable period, I’ve experienced an issue with my system. My computer configuration includes:
* FX-6300 processor @ 3.5GHz - 3.8GHz turbo
* 8GB RAM at 1600MHz DDR3
* GTX 960 with 4GB of VRAM
* BIOSTAR TA970 motherboard
* Two hard drives: a 320GB WD Blue (for the operating system and software) and a 1000GB Seagate Barracuda (for games).
I’ve already taken several troubleshooting steps:
* Monitored component temperatures
* Updated drivers
* Used CrystalDiskInfo to assess the health of both drives (both appear to be functioning correctly)
* Performed disk defragmentation
* Played a variety of games, ranging from smaller titles like CS:GO to larger ones such as GTA V, DOOM, Wolfenstein The Old Blood, and Watch_Dogs 2.
Notably, all of these games exhibit similar freezing behavior:
* CS:GO rarely or never freezes – it’s the most stable game.
* GTA V frequently freezes during large missions, disconnecting me from matches immediately.
* DOOM began exhibiting issues approximately halfway through the game: textures loading incorrectly (displaying low-resolution assets before proper textures), music cutting out, and freezes occurring when attempting to pause (ESC key) followed by a delay before the game resumes. Without pausing, freezes would often occur after 15-20 seconds of gameplay, usually when a visually “bugged” texture or missing music appeared.
* Wolfenstein demonstrates similar problems to DOOM, but with a slightly higher frequency of occurrence.
* Watch_Dogs 2 randomly mutes audio and freezes, or occasionally freezes during general exploration without any apparent trigger.
* Other games with this issue include NFS Payback, which displays the same symptoms as DOOM and Wolfenstein – incorrect textures, audio glitches, and even map loading failures (resulting in falling through the game world).
* Fallout 4 mirrors these issues as well.
I’ve attempted numerous solutions, including removing unnecessary files from my PC and performing thorough system cleanup. I believe that approximately 80% of this problem is not hardware-related, as my components are all operating within acceptable temperatures and driver versions, and I experienced no issues running these games in January and February of this year. This problem began after a system format from Windows 10 to Windows 7, which was performed due to recurring complete freezes unrelated to specific games. Even in that earlier Windows 10 environment, I successfully ran these games without encountering similar problems. Now, the freezes are more persistent, though primarily game-specific.
I’ve extensively researched this issue online and tried many suggested solutions, but haven't found anyone experiencing exactly the same symptoms. I’m hoping someone can offer assistance, as I'm considering a full system reformat to Windows 10 again if I cannot resolve this. However, I prefer to find a solution before resorting to that option, as it’s causing significant frustration.
I've provided a detailed description of my problems and the corresponding game behavior in an effort to give anyone reading this a comprehensive understanding of the situation. If you have any recommendations beyond what I've already tried, please share them – I am grateful for any feedback or advice.
Consider attempting an older Nvidia driver instead of the most recent version, or explore using a different graphics card.
Consider trying an older version of the NVIDIA driver, rather than utilizing the newest release, or experiment with a different graphics card.
