Resolved: Frame Rate Issues
My PC’s frame rates are the primary problem I’m experiencing. For instance, when playing Overwatch with High/Medium settings – which doesn't heavily strain my system – I initially see 299 FPS, but after approximately five minutes, my frames drop to 200/179/180 and fluctuate between 240/250 and 200/180. The only other application running is Chrome with two tabs open, which shouldn’t significantly impact performance.
I've examined my component temperatures; they never surpass 70 degrees Celsius, I’ve thoroughly cleaned my computer, updated all drivers, and disabled the Xbox DVR and related software. I’ve also reviewed the NVIDIA Control Panel settings and power mode configurations.
I’m puzzled by why my FPS decreases from 100 after extended gaming sessions, and why it fluctuates so dramatically. When playing Fortnite with maximum graphics settings except for shadows and post-processing set to minimum, I consistently achieve around 120 FPS, fluctuating to approximately 90. I'm using a 144Hz monitor. Furthermore, my system occasionally feels jerky or unresponsive during gameplay.
Regarding performance in Fortnite: while it's smooth in some moments, achieving approximately 120 frames per second with occasional dips to 90 even at 144 or 120Hz settings is problematic.
Have you updated your graphics card drivers? Specifically, did you recently install a new 1080 model? If so, was the prior GPU driver completely removed before installing the latest version?
When experiencing frame rate decreases, it’s essential to examine temperatures initially. Although you indicate your temperatures are normal, I would still investigate your drivers. Driver issues can occur even without a system upgrade; a corrupted driver installation is possible. To resolve this, use the DDU utility in Safe Mode to thoroughly uninstall the existing drivers and then restart your computer before downloading the most recent Nvidia drivers.
The visuals displayed within the game are dynamic and shift continuously based on gameplay actions, with the system’s rendering speed varying across different frames. Frame rate fluctuations are common in all games. While Nvidia graphics cards require a short period to reach their maximum operating frequency, this does not contribute to these dips in performance; the frame drops originate from the game itself.
What display device are you using? If you possess a 144Hz screen, then any framerate exceeding that value will be imperceptible. It could be 145 frames per second or 2,000 frames per second – it would still appear as 144fps to the viewer.
Within Overwatch, performance is different; however, in Fortnite, I typically experience frame rates of approximately 120, which occasionally dip as low as 90. Despite adjusting the settings to 144 or 120, the rate continues to decrease further.
Regarding performance in Fortnite, while it’s smooth in some moments, I experience frame rates around 120 with variations down to 90. Maintaining settings at 144 or 120 still results in dips below those values.
Have you updated your graphics drivers? Specifically, did you recently install a new 1080 card? If so, did you completely remove the older GPU driver software before installing the latest version?
When encountering dropped frames, the initial step is to check temperatures. Although you indicate your temperatures are normal, I’d still examine your drivers. Even without upgrading the graphics card itself, driver corruption can be a cause. Try using the DDU tool (available at the link below) in safe mode to completely remove the old drivers. After that, restart your computer and download the newest drivers from Nvidia: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/dis...nload.html
