Resolved audio issues
Resolved audio issues
Suddenly, without explanation, the audio settings in all of my games have been reduced by two to three levels compared to their previous state. Sound levels on YouTube remain consistent. The majority of my games are installed through Steam, with the exception of Guild Wars 2, but this issue appears across all titles. Does anyone have any insights into this unusual problem or potential causes?
Recently, Microsoft identified an audio issue within the known problems section of the most recent Windows 10 update (version 1903) – specifically, KB4515384. I believe you're utilizing Windows 10. This defect can lead to reduced audio volume during gameplay, and Microsoft has offered a solution: turning off multi-channel audio within the affected games, along with disabling multi-channel/virtual surround sound in any third-party audio control panels, until a subsequent resolution is available later this month. Furthermore, Microsoft launched an update that resolves complications related to USB audio 2.0 multi-channel microphones; if Windows recognizes such a device, the update will automatically install through standard Windows Updates.
Utilize the Volume Mixer feature to modify the audio output of individual applications. Initially, identify any apps or games with unusual volume levels. It's recommended to begin by launching the game and then pressing ALT+TAB to switch to the desktop for configuration adjustments.
This functionality is particularly helpful when you desire to boost the sound for one program while maintaining a lower level for another. For instance, you can enjoy an immersive audio experience during gameplay alongside clear notifications from Skype. To access the Volume Mixer, follow these steps:
Navigate to the bottom-right corner of your taskbar and right-click the Volume icon.
Choose "Open Volume Mixer" from the menu.
A new window will appear displaying all active applications and their corresponding sound levels. You can adjust each app's volume by dragging the slider up or down as needed. Changes made to one application’s audio settings will not impact the audio of other programs.
Recently, Microsoft has identified an audio issue within the known problems of the most recent Windows 10 update (version 1903) – KB4515384. I’m guessing you're utilizing Windows 10. This defect causes reduced sound levels in particular video games, and Microsoft recommends a temporary solution: turning off multi-channel audio within the affected games, as well as disabling multi-channel/virtual surround sound in any external audio control panels, until a permanent resolution is available later this month. Furthermore, Microsoft has published an update resolving a concern regarding USB audio 2.0 multi-channel microphones. If Windows recognizes such a device, the update will automatically install through standard Windows Updates.
Apologies for the delayed response. I’ve identified an issue related to this sound problem…only the audio parameters set at their highest levels appeared to be impacted by this glitch. Sliders not at maximum could be increased, however, they would then exceed the values of those already maxed. For instance, in Fallout 4, I had all master controls and the voice slider fully activated; during a simulated rainfall (managed by the sound effect slider), I was unable to hear any non-player characters, but adjusting that slider dramatically amplified the volume. I haven’t yet investigated this further, but I plan to modify some game configuration files – see if that resolves it. Hopefully, this is indeed the “MS bug” and a solution will be available shortly.
