It’s the Halloween sale, so I’m thinking about grabbing Resident Evil Five. I’m curious if it ties into the other titles and whether I’ll get a clear understanding of the story. Thanks!

Technically yes. (I suppose) Personally I only enjoy RE1, RE2 & RE3. RE1, 2, 3 & 4 are connected. Chris Redfield from RE1 ties into Claire Redfield in RE2. Leon Kennedy serves as the MC in RE2 and appears in RE4 too. Jill Valentine is present in RE1 and RE3. In RE4, Leon returns as the MC once more, while Umbrella shifts from the T Virus to Las Plagas, which isn't as strong compared to the original T Virus. Las Plagas also shows up in RE5. RE4 marks the point where the franchise starts to decline, with RE1 → RE2 → RE3 being directly linked, but the storyline takes a strange turn in RE4.
