I'm currently on a tight budget and needed a computer for office tasks, learning, and some gaming. I reached out to folks at a recycling center and managed to secure a free machine with an Asrock H81M-VG4 board, an Intel 4th gen i3-4170 CPU, 8GB DDR3 memory, and a spare Seasonic power supply. I also received a donation GPU AMD Biostar RX550 (4GB), a Goodram 128GB SSD, and a 500GB HDD. I was thinking about upgrading the CPU but noticed i7-4790K prices are high these days. Looking for alternatives to XEON or similar options, what advice would you give me?

^^^ I lean more toward the standard i5s and i7s instead of xeons because of the stronger turbo boost, which is really useful if you enable max turbo frequency across all cores. I’m not completely confident about the desktop Haswell setup since it was most common around 2011-03, but it should work on a 1150 with an older microcode—probably under $50. You could go used for a Ryzen 3 3100/3300X/3500X or a 3600X paired with a mid-range processor like the Tomahawk or similar. That should handle the older Haswell version easily. A single 8GB stick would be fine, but adding a second stick isn’t necessary unless you need extra memory; otherwise, keep it simple and avoid extra heatspreaders or XMP settings since the OEM HMTL41G6MFR8C (Hynix 4GBit) will manage well above 3000.

some individuals stop projects after events and avoid further work. they believe an overpriced new A320 board is acceptable if it works and remains stable. opt for that instead of the older Haswell since you can upgrade to a more modern setup like AM5 or LGA1851 once funds are available. for Haswell, consider reselling once cash arrives—then buy a used 3600 and a 2x8 DDR4 stick for around $30. alternatively, look for cheaper older 2133 or 2666 sticks in OEM 8GB form, which can save money. if you find a decent old Hynix (HMA41G6AFR8N) or Samsung 8GB stick, it’s worth the effort. for a lower cost, consider a used double-sided Hynix or Samsung stick. upgrading to a new XMP board is recommended, or go with the latest one if you can’t find a cheaper option easily.
