We discussed how to determine a suitable broadband speed for gaming on an individual basis. We considered just gaming needs without other activities. To measure these, we’d need to look at factors like user count and typical usage patterns. Since reliable data is hard to find, I’m hoping this thread will help gather the right insights. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

For pure gaming? Under 1Mb/s per user. You're just sending tiny data chunks. We used dial-up for years—now it's all the extra work your PC does that adds up. I've updated this: constant alerts and updates for background apps, much bigger video streams, etc.

Online gaming prioritizes minimal latency rather than high data usage. Performance depends mainly on your internet connection's ping, with lower ping offering smoother gameplay. You can check your current ping by running a speed test on sites like speedtest.net.

Gaming alone won't consume much bandwidth. However, you need more for downloading games and updates. A slow connection combined with streaming services like Netflix can cause your pings to spike dramatically. Even if you only require a few Mbps for the game, ensure you have enough capacity to handle updates without disruption. A minimum of 10Mbps should suffice, allowing updates to start smoothly. When multiple users are involved, bandwidth needs grow gradually rather than in sudden bursts, since traffic patterns vary over time. Monitoring your network while streaming can help identify peak usage periods and optimize performance.
