Consider power line adapters or MOCA adapters initially. If that doesn't work, opt for a PCI Express card. USB dongles are usually not recommended.
Is it possible to connect a cat5 or higher cable from your modem to the computer? A solid, wired setup is definitely better.
That would be ideal, though I'm not sure how to reach the cable from the first floor.
