You're navigating a tricky situation with your RAM setup. The specs say 5200 max, so going over could cause instability. Stick to the rated speed unless you're confident in your system's ability to handle it. The 7950X3D should work similarly to the Steam Deck, but make sure it fits your motherboard. For video use, allocating RAM isn't just a myth—higher speeds can improve performance, though lower timings (like 32,32,32) are generally better for stability. Prioritize matching timings and ensure compatibility before making changes.
The optimal frequency lies around 6000mhz CL32 or CL36. I've tested both 5600mhz CL36 and 6000mhz CL36 EXPO rated chips with all Ryzen 7000 series processors successfully, without any problems. I haven't tried the 7950X3D yet, but worked with the other two X3D models. My preferred RAM has been the Kingston FURY Beast DDR5 6000MHz (KF560C36BBEK2-32) or the 5600mhz EXPO rated version. Enabling EXPO/XMP in BIOS is essential for overclocking, as the RAM supports running at the advertised speed. That said, it's an overclock so stability isn't guaranteed, but it rarely happens.
Recommended 6000cl30-36. Higher speeds will cause extra delay because they aren't properly synced. My current DDR5-6400 setup handles 6000 28-36-36-80 well without any issues. Upgrading further won’t improve stability and might even add complexity. The transition from JEDEC to XMP and tightening timings is quite a jump in system latency.
Thank you for sharing your insights. Do you think anyone has ideas about needing RAM similar to VRAM in a GPU if not? Otherwise, I might look into that and try to speed up my schedule to get a GPU sooner. Also, since I plan to use an AMD board, should I stick with Expo-only or be okay with XMP RAM? I don’t want to overclock with a mini ITX case; I just want to keep the stock setup. If the motherboard only lists certain RAM options, does that imply those are the only ones that work? Anything about stability in the list?
