Upgrading from Windows 7 or 8 to 10 should trigger the update automatically. If it doesn't, then proceed with caution.

This summer, Windows 7 activation keys should be compatible with the corresponding Windows 10 version. According to my knowledge, all Windows 7 keys are designed to work in the Windows 10 equivalent, meaning a Win7 Pro or higher will activate a Win10 Pro install.

I will attempt this on my parent's desktop once more. I tried after the free upgrade period ended but it didn't work. Appreciate you letting me know.

Previously, during this summer, the system functioned properly. The "free upgrade" cutoff period offered some leeway.

During the Windows 10 setup, input your Windows 7 activation key. You won’t be able to perform the free upgrade option, but you can install Windows 10 fresh and apply your Win 7 key. This method succeeded for me. NOTE: @Rex_G mentioned uncertainty about OEM and grey market keys; the approach I used was all retail. Edited December 18, 2018 by wkdpaul
