Hello. You're considering an upgrade for your Rust setup and future projects. Your current configuration includes a Ryzen 7 1700X with stock speeds, Corsair Hydro 110i cooling, 32GB of G.Skill RAM at 2933MHz, and an AM4 motherboard. You're weighing the purchase of a 5800X3D, new RAM sticks, and whether to switch platforms. Your questions focus on performance gains, compatibility, and installation steps.
Bios update before adjusting CPU settings. Any changes made will be noted. There might be some tweaks here and there; changing the CPU is definitely significant. According to the comparison, it's not clear about TDP compliance for cooling. Switching from 95W to 105W might exceed your current cooling capacity. If your temperatures stay under 75°C, your existing cooler should suffice. Keep searching for replacement options.
Holy bottleneck. 5800X3D is a solid buy, definitely the top AM4 CPU for gaming right now. It remains one of the quickest gaming CPUs available today. The motherboard should still perform adequately; VRM might be a minor concern but gaming won’t demand full power. RAM is fine unless you require more, and I’d suggest skipping a new one. The performance gain wouldn’t be huge. You’d only need to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version that supports 5800X3D, and only then replace the CPU. Your cooler should still handle the heat from this chip.
Choosing any Ryzen 5000 CPU would significantly improve your setup. The 5600 or 5700X are ideal for 1440p or higher resolutions, or if you prefer not to swap out your GPU while staying on the same platform. These models can handle a 3070 well at 1440p and likely perform adequately at 1080p. The motherboard is compatible with the 5800X3D, but this CPU demands more power from the VRM compared to the others. At 1080p, it remains a solid choice, particularly if you plan to upgrade your graphics card later. Your RAM isn’t stable at 3200MHz due to the limitations of earlier Ryzen memory controllers. This issue should resolve after upgrading the CPU. With 4x8GB in dual-channel dual-rank configuration, and modern 2x16GB usually working in single-rank dual-channel, you’ll likely see better memory performance. The 5800X3D doesn’t depend on RAM, but regular Zen 3 CPUs do. Regardless of the CPU you pick, updating the BIOS is essential—download the latest from the official site and flash it. If your cooler is functioning properly, it should suffice for all these configurations. Edit: The 5800X3D rivals the Ryzen 7700X or Intel i7 12700K in gaming performance. You don’t need a new platform just yet.
I own a 27" monitor at 1440p and 144hz, so I’m planning to maintain the 1440p setting for gaming. Upgrading from the 27" 1080p at 60hz was a real surprise—everything looked sharper and smoother at the same size, with higher resolution and frame rate. I’ve decided to keep the 3070 for now and won’t upgrade it. Thanks everyone for your advice; I’ll definitely update the BIOS next year—I’m comfortable with the process.
Be aware that updating your BIOS will make your CPU incompatible! The X370 model with a Ryzen 1000 won't function properly anymore.
5900X aligns closely with the surrounding options, especially given the similar pricing trends between 5800X3D and 5900X.
For gaming choose the 5800X3D. For work use the 5900X. It offers more cores and faster speeds, though it lacks a larger cache and other features that games need.
For gaming it's kinda pointless as between a 5800x or 5900x theres basically no difference. The 5800x3d is faster in gaming basically always
