Hello, I understand you're unsure about the best place to ask this question. I apologize if that's not the right topic. You mentioned you've already set up all the necessary steps on your router and firewall, but you're still facing a "connection refused" issue. You tried using a program called SPI port forward and it worked suddenly—why did that happen? I'm sorry this isn't the right sub for your query, and thank you for your patience.

No, the server isn't running on the destination address. It's being forwarded to a different location.

You're asking about the purpose of a port and cautioning against opening it to Windows systems due to security risks. You mention frequent failed login attempts when SSH or SFTP is exposed, using RSA keys for authentication, and note that you maintain strong overall security measures. You suggest setting up a VPN as an alternative, highlighting the ease of implementation with affordable hardware like a Raspberry Pi.

It's not about FTP or servers being crucial; the FTP was merely an illustration. I was curious about why that happens—why forwarding it through your router fails while using software succeeds.

It seems the answer hinges on the specific client you're working with. It might not need any software installed, but it's important to identify the client first. If it's running on Windows, you'll need to specify which port it should listen on, as that's what the program is doing. I'm not sure about using FTP/SFTP/SSH between Windows and a Windows machine over a WAN connection—I haven't tried it myself.

Check if the server is active on port 21 using netstat, ensuring it's open for connections.

It seems the port isn't listed in the output. Check your configuration or network settings.

Your FTP server isn't operating or isn't responding on port 21. This results in the "Connection refused" error.

I'm really confused, that wasn't working. I checked the port and tried to run it, but I thought I could test it without actually using it. Thanks.
