I’ve achieved my new 9700K at 5.1Ghz with a clock speed of 1.31v using an MSI Z390 Edge motherboard and a Noctua NH-U12A cooler. In Cinebench R15 the peak temperature reached 79°C on one core (1666 FPS), and during PassMark tests it hit 80°C on another core (around 20,300). I’m planning to install a Corsair H115i Pro 280mm AIO soon, which should bring down the temperatures further. This was my first overclocking attempt. I’m interested in seeing if 5.2Ghz or higher is possible. Would be great if you could share any advice or warnings about pushing that speed.
Nothing at all? Worst case is resetting your BIOS settings completely (unless you must wipe CMOS). Feel free to go as far as you like, as long as stability remains (meaning no weird WHEL errors). Stay cool.
Lol @ 3.36v Yeah so my first test was R15 which, as you mentioned, usually lasts only a minute maybe. I ran it three times... but then I compared it to PassMark’s CPU bench which can run about 8-10 minutes? After that, I did some game benchmarks (which are more GPU focused). So definitely didn’t get an hour of results. I was thinking about buying AIDA 64 just for that purpose. Now I’ll definitely go ahead with it. Want to know about CMOS? Resetting it only makes sense if you notice instability during an OC attempt, or should I reset it every time you try again? Also, since I plugged in a 5.1Ghz processor at 1.36v and adjusted the voltage between tests without touching the CMOS, is that necessary?
I’ve checked it a bit, but if things get worse and I must clear the CMOS, I’m hoping my RAID setup (which has Windows installed) will still work. It looks like just re-enabling the raid controller after resetting the CMOS should let it recognize my array.
I run one of my i7 8086ks at 5.1ghz and there are 2 resounds I don't run it at 5.2. The first is that there is no gain in the overclock on my CPU except a better Cinebench R15 single core score. The second is that it puts the idle temps into the high 30s low 40s with my cooling solution so it is unacceptable to me. Fortunately Gamers Nexus fully tested my CPU and they found that the only real performance gain after 5ghz was at 5.35ghz. Since that is way past my cooling solution there in no pint in me going further. I suggest you do some research to see if it is worth it when it comes to performance. It is not on my CPUs, but it may be on yours.
Great, I understand you can configure multiple profiles. Do you have any background in RAM overclocking? I own a quality setup and use XMP settings. While I prefer not to interfere with passive cooling, if it’s safe to try boosting the frequency by about 100Mhz, I’d be interested in taking advantage of it.
