Hello folks. Question for you all. I currently have a 3700x cpu and saw on Amazon that the 5800xt is on sale for $130 shipped. I have a 1080ti gpu (ancient, I know) and was curious if it’s even worth messing with swapping CPU’s given the dated card? I do light gaming and some light video encoding. Thanks!

For simple games and basic videos, performance may not be significantly improved.

Light gaming refers to playing games at a basic level without advanced features. It’s likely unnecessary for your needs unless you specifically want minimal performance. Unless "light gaming" has a different meaning for you.

Casual gaming is my norm, with a focus on solo experiences, though I always jump into multiplayer whenever the opportunity arises. I also run high-resolution displays at 1440p.

Light gaming means playing with minimal resource demands. Are you focusing on that aspect? Which games are you enjoying?

I don’t play much, but I appreciate the visual aspects of my single-player experiences, so I think some materials would help. I also recognize my limits, and I hope this makes sense.

It's unclear why it's difficult to identify the specific games you're playing, but generally speaking, a CPU upgrade may have minimal effect if your GPU remains unchanged. I'd consider upgrading the GPU first.

I misunderstood the post at first. It seems my thinking wasn’t quite right. I remember older titles like Bioshock, Crysis remaster, and want the Oblivion remaster. I’m into Control and any single-player games on Steam that look appealing. Multiplayer options are inconsistent. Right now there aren’t many solid choices. I’ll focus more on GPU considerations. I’m hoping for some good discounts soon. Eventually, I’d like to be able to boost settings to ultra and maintain a steady 100+ FPS at 1440p.

For that, you'll need a 7800XT or higher. The 3700 works in the meantime.

In that scenario, a GPU upgrade would offer more performance boost than a CPU upgrade. The new RTX 5000 series is currently quite unstable... and the AMD RX 9070/XT doesn't significantly improve (varies by region). I’d consider used RTX 3070/Ti, 3080/Ti, RX 6800XT, 6900/6950 XT. If you manage to locate them new or at a fair price, RTX 4070/Ti (Super), RTX 4080 Super, RX 7800 XT, RX 7900 XT/X would be worth it.
