Reporting problems with stuttering, FPS drops, or frame rate issues while playing games.
Hello!
I've been experiencing some unusual stuttering while playing games lately. It began a few days ago during a session of GTAV and has now become a recurring problem across all titles. When I launch a game, it takes a few minutes before things start to lag. It seems like most frames are still in sync, but every half second or so one frame takes about three times longer, then it jumps ahead to the next one.
According to Nvidias performance overlay, the FPS drops slightly from a steady 60 to around 53-58, with 99% variation (I've seen as low as 11). Latency stays consistent at around 25ms or 91ms, though in-game it's usually between 120-130ms.
Running the UFO frame time test doesn't provide clear results—it just shows average FPS in the low to mid-50s. The problem isn’t limited to games; it also happens outside of them and continues even after closing the applications. It disappears about a minute after the game ends.
I’ve checked many similar reports and tried various troubleshooting steps, but nothing matches exactly what I’m facing. No solutions have worked so far.
To be honest, temperatures aren’t the issue. There’s no dust, the PC isn’t noisy, and the temps are normal. Here are my system details for reference:
- GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 TI (driver v531.79)
- CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X
- RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix RGB (3600MT/s, XMP)
- OS: Windows 10 Pro build 19045
- Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster B2240 (1920 x 1050, 60Hz)
I know the GPU is a bit low-end and the monitor isn’t cutting-edge, but I haven’t encountered any problems with them until recently.
I’m really thankful for any partial information that could help. Thanks in advance!
Cheers!
As mentioned by MM, it's useful to note the brand and model of your PSU.
Your CPU and GPU exceed the recommended specifications for GTA V; if there are no problems, it’s unlikely they’re the cause.
Could you tell me what drive you're using for the game and operating system? Also, have the OS, MB chipset, and MB BIOS been updated? Do you have the suggested 15% free space available on the drive?
The free space refers to both HDDs and SSDs, covering 15% of the actual storage, not just the advertised amount.
Have you attempted a clean reinstallation of the GPU driver? For this, using DDU in safe mode, rebooting, and then installing the driver is recommended.
Additionally, consider checking for any third-party software that might be consuming resources. This can be done through Task Manager.
You might also want to run a test on the drive—most major manufacturers provide free diagnostic tools for this purpose. Just ensure you don’t use the same brand tool as your drive.
I have upgraded to the newest Windows release and the latest stable BIOS version. I'll check for any chipset drivers.
There is over 15% of space available on all my drives.
TaskManager does not display any unusual activity.
I haven't performed a GPU driver clean install and will review that as well.
I completed a fresh GPU driver reinstall, added the latest chipset drivers, and observed that Ryzen Master isn't installing properly. I ran Crystal Disk Info, which indicates 94%+ on both my boot and games SSDs, and shows yellow on the HDD (where GTA is installed), though the problem persists across all games.
A day later, I noticed GPU utilization fluctuating widely. Normally it stays around 80%+ during Forza Horizon 5, but now it swings between 40% and 70%, occasionally reaching 90%.
Since there are no more suggestions, I'll proceed with a fresh Windows installation.
It is wise to perform an SFC scan initially, even if the likelihood is low, just in case system file damage is contributing to the issue.
Thank you for the idea! It fixed both files, but it didn't resolve the issue further.
